NewStar executive assumes IFPA chairmanship
Salinas, California, January 10, 2005 - A new chairman will be a part of the International Fresh-cut Produce Association, Alexandria, Va.
Bob Whitaker, vice president of product development and food safety at NewStar Fresh Foods LLC, Salinas, Calif., was elected chairman of IFPA’s 2005 board of directors.
Jerry Welcome, president of the association, said Whitaker will be a critical part of the board because of Whitaker’s food science background.
“He’s a very intelligent, smart guy who knows the industry really well, especially the science part,” Welcome said.
Whitaker obtained a doctorate in biology and spent 16 years with DNA Plant Technology Corp., a produce-oriented biotechnology company in Oakland, Calif. He set up food safety programs, including a good agricultural practices program.
Welcome said Whitaker had good ideas about trying to broaden what the association does for membership, such as participating in more media relations, having member training sessions to help understand the market better and conducting research.
