NewStar Launches Four New Products


Salinas, California, July 28, 2004 - NewStar, a grower, shipper and processor of fresh produce, today announced the launch of four new products as part of its continuing efforts to support its customers while building brand recognition and consumer demand.

The four new products, 12/3 Count Broccoli Crowns, and individually wrapped Red Leaf, Green Leaf, and Romaine Lettuce, are shipped in film wrap featuring the NewStar logo, and design elements from the company's value-added product line.

"Our launch of the re-branded value-added product line over the last year has been very well received by both our customers, and by consumers," said John Killeen, NewStar vice president of sales and marketing. "These new offerings extend that brand value, while supporting customers with commodity products that are perceived to have a higher value with consumers. And, because the wrap keeps the product from being touched while on the shelf, it offers consumers a higher degree of confidence in the product's safety, too," Killeen continued.

The 12/3 Count Broccoli Crowns are field packed to maximize freshness, while offering faster order turns than traditional shrink-wrapped products. Film wraps also deliver increased yields as compared to traditional packaging, and its anti-fog properties ensure greater consumer appeal, improved merchandising compared to traditional bulk broccoli, and, with the UPC/PLU imprinted right on the wrap, check out is faster and more accurate, too.

The 12/3 Count Broccoli Crowns are shipped iceless, bringing substantial savings in shipping costs, reduced storage space needs with more product per carton, and mitigating the issues surrounding waste water and water borne contamination. NewStar has also taken steps to ensure that the cold chain is unbroken once the product is packed, extending product life.

The Romaine, Red Leaf, and Green Leaf products also come with the UPC/PLU on the wrap, and the wrap is sealed with tape rather than heat, reducing product breakdown due to exposure to heat. As with the Broccoli Crowns, consumer-friendly packaging, improved product safety, and more enticing displays can significantly increase category sales for retailers.

"Retailers will realize cost savings with these leaf product packages, as there is no need to trim the product. They can concentrate more energy on customer service and improved merchandising.
