NewStar Opens New Salinas Facility
Salinas, California, July 12, 2004 - NewStar, a grower, shipper and processor of fresh produce, celebrated the May opening of their new value-added processing facility and cooler, adjacent to the company's main office in Salinas.
The new facility, with over 49,000 square feet of processing area, 59,000 square feet of cooling area, and 8,000 square feet of service rooms, is state-of-the-art, and allows NewStar to house all of its operations under one roof for the first time, maximizing operational efficiencies.
The facility is designed so that as produce comes in from the field it is immediately cooled, processed using leading-edge technology, moved onto pallets in the pick area, then placed directly into refrigerated trucks for immediate shipping.
Food safety was a key consideration in the facility's design, incorporating stainless steel curbing and drains, high ceilings, efficient cooling systems, and non-skid flooring.
"We designed the plant specifically for processing one of our leading products, spinach," said Dave Eldredge, NewStar president and CEO. "All of the equipment was made to handle spinach and similar leafy products without damaging them, and does a better job of cleaning and packaging compared to the other options we considered. Best of all, we now have the capacity to grow our business in this key area," Eldredge continued.
